Un tartan non si nega a nessuno

Soprattutto se a chiedertelo sono tuo fratello e la sua futura sposa come regalo di nozze. Non un kilt, non un copricapo alternativo al tradizionale velo in tulle, non una coperta destinata ai pic-nic della domenica, ma la riproduzione del classico tessuto scozzese su una parete di circa cinque metri quadrati, in soggiorno. Ovviamente, sapevano che avrei preso la cosa molto sul serio. E’ iniziata così una lunga e affascinante ricerca sul tartan, in uso nelle Highlands fin dall’infinito passato e sopravvissuto a invasioni, guerre, carestie, morti (in gaelico, tarsainn significa “attraverso” – ottima metafora, mi pare, del suo aver attraversato secoli di storia), identificativo delle diverse regioni del territorio, poi dei clan che le hanno abitate, oggi simbolo di una nazione.
